01 / The idea

A club is a long story. A match is where it gets tested.

You take charge of one club. The league runs whether or not you are watching. Players age, form turns, and the table remembers. The job is to build something that can keep winning, not just something that can win on Saturday.

The match is not a line of text at the end of the afternoon. It is eleven players, a ball, and the space between them, played out in two dimensions. You set the shape. They make the decisions.

02 / On the pitch

The pitch is the argument.

A formation is not a picture. It is a set of distances that opens and closes as the ball moves. A full-back steps up. A midfielder arrives late. A defender is a yard behind the line. The match turns on those yards.

Phase of play
What a side is doing as a unit: in possession, out of possession, or in the seconds after the ball changes hands.
Anchor
The spot a player is trying to occupy. It moves with the ball, the shape and the instructions. Players do not all read it at the same speed.
Commitment
The action a player has chosen, and keeps choosing until the next decision. Football is full of players half-committed to two things.

A small part of the language the match understands.

03 / The world

A world with a memory.

Real countries and real league shapes. Invented clubs, invented players. The map is familiar; the names are not. Seasons end, players retire, and a youth intake can change a club's next decade. The world does not reset because you had a bad year.

  1. Aug

    Opening day

    The table starts empty.

  2. Jan

    Transfer window

The squad you have is not the squad you finish with.

  3. May

    Season end

A champion, a final table, and a set of retirements.

  4. Jun

    Youth intake

Every club gets a new crop. Most will not make it.

  5. Jul

    Rollover

Everyone is a year older. The next season is drawn.
